Writing
We teach the reading, writing, speaking and listening objectives in the national curriculum. Our English curriculum sets out the progression of reading and writing skills taught at Aspin from Foundation to Year 6. English is taught everyday and each week includes; reading fluency and comprehension skills (see reading page) teaching and recapping SPaG skills, development of oracy to support planning, writing or editing, time to write independently and time to review and feedback on each other’s writing.
Meaningful Writing Opportunities at Aspin
Children’s writing opportunities are carefully designed to be purposeful and engaging. Our approach is built around carefully chosen texts that inspire and enthuse learners. We also provide opportunities to write about children's own learning and personal experiences.
We follow a three-step approach to writing: Collect, Connect, and Create. Each writing unit begins with a writing mission that identifies the purpose and audience, the key skills to be developed, and the end goal—an extended piece of writing.
Collect - We begin by engaging children in their writing mission through rich classroom talk. Together, we explore high-quality examples of writing (WAGOLLs – What A Good One Looks Like), analysing the grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation needed for a specific purpose.
Connect - Modelling is a vital part of teaching writing. Children observe the full writing process—from planning and drafting to editing and publishing. Through guided practice at sentence level, questioning, and analysis, pupils learn how to adapt style and structure for different purposes.
Create - Each unit concludes with children planning, drafting, editing, and publishing a final extended piece of writing. Their work is celebrated through classroom displays that showcase published work.
In addition to these extended pieces, pupils complete an independent writing task once a term and produce a further extended piece of writing to summarise their learning at the end of History and Geography topics.
The Writing Flow Chart outlines key areas of teaching and learning in KS1 and KS2 at Aspin Park Academy.
