Our Approach to Teaching Maths

At Aspin Park Academy, we follow the White Rose Maths framework, using carefully sequenced small steps and blocks to build deep, lasting understanding. Maths is taught through the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) approach, allowing children to first explore concepts with practical resources before moving on to visual representations and finally abstract methods.

Each lesson is designed to revisit prior learning, introduce new mathematical vocabulary, and guide pupils towards clear learning objectives. Reasoning and problem solving are embedded throughout every lesson, encouraging children to think critically and explain their understanding.

To support fluency, children also learn essential number facts through our Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs) at the beginning of each lesson. These are progressive and change every half term. See our progression KIRF document here. In addition to this the Mastering Number programme is used in EYFS-Y2 to develop children's number sense and quick recall of maths facts. The Claire Christie Times Table Programme is used in KS2 to teach multiplication facts.

Maths is brought to life through exciting enrichment activities. These include whole-school STEM days, dressing up and exploring key concepts during Number Day, and applying maths in real-life contexts—such as designing and selling products during our Enterprise Week.

Our maths calculation policy outlines the key calculations that we teach at Aspin Park for each year group.
